Lucky us to draw Canterbury in the cup - they finished runners up in the league last season and ruined us away from home, so this match was going to be a real test for our 'new side'
We did not recognize any of their players or management, and soon found out they were all 2nd year last season so a new side themselves this term.
We welcomed back Frank - our inspirational captain, and also Curt - another 2nd year 18 and an important player for us, so overall we were stronger than last weekend.
We started the match very positively, kept possesion, tested the water from distance early on through Frank and Nicky. We were playing some nice football, Ben up front working hard on his movement and closing down, Dan keeping things simple, linking play well from midfield to forward.
We went 1-0 up through some good play in midfield, the ball passed on to Dan who found Ben's forward run, Ben then slotted from an angle past their keeper for his 1st goal for us.
We continued to press, some good play in wide areas, had great deliveries from corners from Nicky, but it was a deep free kick which resulted in 2-0, Curt finding Dean at the far post who headed back over the keeper.
The only downside of the 1st half was losing Frank to a sprained ankle. But we reshuffled, Dan dropping back and Lewis coming on upfront.
The 2nd half we carried on pressing, closing down early, forcing mistakes, our work rate was excellent throughout. Ben got his reward through sheer hard work, chasing down their keeper, he managed to block a clearance which resulted in the ball falling to him and an open goal for 3-0
More pressure, more mistakes, Dean closed down their right back, caught him in possesion, won the ball and run on to cooly slot the ball past their keeper for 4-0 (Dean now 3 goals in 2 games - same amount as all of last season!)
A very good performance overall, individually Curt solid at the back, Ben 2 goals and good workrate - same as Dean. But man of the match goes to Nicky, never stopped working, sets our play up - always available and wanting the ball.
Next week away to Margate in the league.
